2023 exhibitions

[2023] This year, Matemateca held 25 exhibitions in total, with more than 4,000 visitors. We mostly serve public schools that went to IME, and there were also some exhibitions in private institutions.

PRCEU project

[2023] Matemateca was awarded the Public Edital PRCEU 02/2022 – Project “Preservation and Curation of Collections and Cultural Heritage at the University of São Paulo”, in the amount of R$ 26,000.00, aiming to improve the conditions of itinerancy and visibility of Matemateca with: (i) restoration of collection items that have become less used due to wear and tear from handling; (ii) inclusion of physical displays and their supports with complementary information about mathematics, including historical aspects and contemporary context, enriching temporary or traveling exhibitions; (iii) acquisition of consumable material (cardboard and other items) to create custom packaging for the pieces for transportation. Among the renovated pieces, the list includes: polyhedrons, symmetry break, spiralographs, pairs of cubes, stretched wire ellipsographs, double pendulums, Galton boxes, and ellipsographs, among others. You can check out all these pieces in our collection. And now, in the Matemateca exhibitions, the pieces will be flanked by ten texts providing diverse and curious information about mathematics.

UNESP visit

[2023 dec] This month undergraduate students from the Institute of Biosciences, Letters and Exact Sciences - IBILCE, São José do Rio Preto Campus, at UNESP attended an exhibition at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics at USP.

PIC - OBMEP

[2023 dec] On December 2nd, Matemateca welcomed students from the PIC (Jr. Scientific Initiation Program), an OBMEP initiative that aims to transmit basic mathematical culture to students. The activity lasted all morning and 300 people attended.

Monitored Visit - USP and Professions Program

[2023 aug] On August 23rd, USP's annual event, "Professions Fair" took place, in which Matemateca contributed using part of our collection. The event targets those who want to take the entrance exam and aims to present something about each available career.

Pedalando com Cultura

[2023 jun] On June 4th, the USP Butantã campus will be open to the entire population with an unprecedented event in celebration of World Bicycle Day (June 3rd) and World Environment Day (June 5th). Matemateca will participate in "Pedalando com Cultura" from 9 am to 1 pm. For more information, access the Instagram of the Pro-Rectory of Culture and University Extension (@culturanausp). Matemateca at Albert Sabin School

[2023 march] On March 23 and 24, an exhibition of our collection took place at the Albert Sabin School. The event attended 2000 young students over the 2 days, from elementary school to high school.

Avenues

[2023 march] On International Mathematics Day, March 14, Matemateca held a presentation of part of its collection at Colégio Avenues, at the São Paulo unit, to celebrate mathematics and show that it is possible to have fun while learning.

Reception of the institute's undergraduate and graduate freshmen

[2023 march] In the first week of classes of the semester, Matemateca set up an exhibition in block B of the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME) for new entrants to get to know a little about the work carried out and the pieces in the collection.

House Museum of Dona Yayá

[2023 jan] At the beginning of 2023, Matemateca made a brief appearance at Casa de Dona Yayá, a museum located in São Paulo, in Bela Vista. The play Soap Films was made available for exhibition and had an audience of more than 70 people.
